Belgravia Foundation supports professional development with Monash University students

Belgravia Foundation strives to support the entire leisure sector through multi-layered activities.

Supporting the next generation of workers and leaders is one part of this. Through carefully planned and supported activities, people who seek to gain experience and deeper understanding related to diversity, inclusion and leisure can gain knowledge and skills that can be carried forward and influence their work for years to come.

Belgravia Foundation has hosted Amila Buzo, a third year Health Science student at Monash University completing field placement with Belgravia Foundation and Belgravia Leisure.

Amila completed an important project that audited the images available to Belgravia Foundation to use when seeking to highlight and communicate the vast opportunities, roles and experiences of people of any background through connection to leisure facilities, programs, services and employment.

Over the past three years of studying the Health Science course, Amila has gained a better understanding of the importance of practicing healthy behaviours from adolescents into adulthood.

Being very fascinated in all the environmental and physical factors involved in influencing behaviours, she wanted to get a sense of how health promoting initiatives she had learned about would play out in a practical, real-life setting.

From a young age, Amila had been involved in much health promoting sporting programs and events such as karate group practice, interschool sports and folk dance. Through part taking in folk dance and being involved in the organisation of folk-dance events, she was able to connect well with her peers and encourage community involvement.

A sense of belonging within the community was the core of Amila’s childhood, it had improved her well-being dramatically. She, therefore, would love to offer and provide future generations with the opportunity to get involved with community sports and activities which will enhance their connectedness.

Working alongside Belgravia Leisure and Belgravia Foundation has been a perfect match. The values and initiatives align with working collaboratively in delivering programs and services to improve the overall health of the population, specifically those of disadvantage.

Conducting placement with Belgravia Leisure and Belgravia Foundation has helped Amila identify disadvantaged groups regarding their culturally and linguistic diversity, which she had not considered before. This has opened her eyes to all the health initiatives which could be implemented to ensure improved health outcomes globally.
