Belgravia Foundation partners with Cleveland Aquatic Centre to deliver health and wellbeing festival for Redlands senior community

Earlier this year Belgravia Foundation and Cleveland Aquatic Centre were successful in their joint application for the Redlands Coast Seniors Month Grant Program to help create opportunities for older adults to embrace a healthy lifestyle and connect with community. In October 2022, the health and wellbeing festival came to fruition.

The event started with a mega aqua class that allowed older adults to participate in a free healthy activity that promotes physical fitness through a welcoming, safe, social and fun experience. After the aqua class, breakfast was served where the participants enjoyed heart-healthy bites, socialized, and engaged with the community. During the breakfast, two community organisations including Cancer Council Queensland Redlands Branch and Circle of Men had exhibition tables to provide participants with valuable information about important services and current volunteering opportunities, overall helping to build community capacity.

Following breakfast many other activities and artistic performances were scheduled including Choral Chorale choir, Mama Juju and The Jam Tarts. The audience immersed themselves into the performances by singing and dancing along with the performers.

Belgravia Foundation and Cleveland Aquatic Centre want to thank and acknowledge Redlands City Council for providing funding to support the health and wellbeing festival as part of the Seniors Week celebrations. The festival welcomed over 200 older adults throughout the event and connected them with healthy and social activities on the day but also encouraged ongoing participation through local community groups.

Events like this create a pathway for older adults to connect with each other, and the community in which they live.  With people living longer, often in the absence of a lifelong partner, and having much more time post-employment and as ‘empty nesters’, creating pathways to connect older adults to experiences that contribute to health and happiness are the hallmark of excellent community service and support!
