From learner to lifeguard: Junaid’s journey through the All In! Swim Program at MOVE

When a single swimming lesson can change the course of a young person’s life, the impact of the All In! Swim Program becomes unmistakably clear.

Established by Belgravia Foundation in 2021, the All In! Program was designed to break down financial, cultural and social barriers to swimming and water safety education. As a not‑for‑profit organisation, Belgravia Foundation leads and facilitates the program to ensure individuals and communities who have historically been excluded can participate with confidence - and, in many cases, discover opportunities they never imagined possible.

At MOVE Moonee Valley, Belgravia Foundation’s All In! Program has enabled the delivery of a 50% subsidised learn‑to‑swim pathway, supported through locally raised funds. Working in close partnership with Wurundjeri Elders and Moonee Valley City Council, together, this partnership has helped identify participants and shape a program that is culturally safe, welcoming and responsive to the needs of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and First Nations communities.

The impact of this work is powerfully reflected in Junaid’s story. His introduction to the All In! Program began during a school visit to Ascot Vale Leisure Centre, where he took his first steps towards building confidence in the water. With consistent encouragement and support from the venue team, Junaid developed essential swimming and water safety skills. Through Belgravia Foundation’s facilitation and support, he was then able to access lifeguard training through Life Saving Victoria.

Junaid’s progression from a beginner swimmer to a qualified lifeguard demonstrates how the All In! Program creates pathways beyond the pool - opening doors to education, employment and meaningful community contribution.

Junaid said, “I just want to say thank you for everything you have done for me on my journey so far. Over twelve months ago, I started training to become a lifeguard. At first, I didn’t know where to start, but you really helped me find my path.”

For Belgravia Foundation, stories like Junaid’s show what is possible when targeted investment, culturally informed program design and strong community partnerships come together. As the All In! Program continues to expand across centres nationally, Belgravia Foundation remains committed to strengthening access at MOVE Moonee Valley and beyond - helping more people build confidence in the water, pursue meaningful opportunities and contribute to safer, more connected communities.
