A Pathway to Confidence: Supporting Mental Health Through Movement in South-Western Sydney
Belgravia Foundation is proud to celebrate the success of an inspiring and ground-breaking mental health initiative at Whitlam Leisure Centre, delivered in partnership with the South-Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD).
This collaborative program is transforming lives by supporting community members living with mental health challenges to build confidence, increase activity levels, prevent and address cardio‑metabolic risk factors, and feel genuinely welcomed in a gym environment. As Venue Manager Tahnee Hart shares, “This partnership is creating meaningful opportunities for people to connect, be active and feel part of the community. It’s incredibly rewarding to see participants building confidence in a supportive environment.”
Designed to promote physical, social and emotional wellbeing, the program provides in-patient participants with guided sessions over an eight‑week period, supported closely by dedicated SWSLHD staff. For many participants, this marks their very first experience in a gym setting - an important milestone designed to become a pathway to access to local community fitness centres, thus sustaining improved wellbeing, greater independence and stronger social connection.
The impact of the program has been overwhelmingly positive, achieving outcomes identified in international research. Participants have reported:
Increased confidence and comfort in a gym environment
Improved muscular strength and engagement in regular physical activity
Greater independence in selecting exercises and setting up equipment
Enhanced social interaction and community connection
Development of personalised exercise routines
Re‑engagement of individuals who were previously housebound or sedentary
A strengthened pathway towards long‑term wellbeing
A pathway to ongoing support
At the completion of the eight‑week program, participants are invited to continue their health journey through Belgravia Foundation’s Take Charge Program. This initiative plays a key role in reducing financial and social barriers by providing structured, affordable support within a familiar and welcoming community setting.
Whitlam Leisure Centre, Belgravia Foundation and SWSLHD continue to work collaboratively to strengthen this transition process, ensuring every participant has the opportunity to remain active and connected beyond the initial program.
