Aquatic and leisure facilities are more than places to swim, they are community hubs where connection, wellbeing, and inclusion come to life. Yet for many, these spaces remain out of reach due to barriers that can and must be addressed. 

 

The 2025 NSW/ACT Diversity and Inclusion in Leisure Forum is shining a spotlight on aquatics among other themes, recognising the sector’s unique potential to lead the way in inclusive practice. With presentations grounded in evidence and co-designed with community, the Forum offers practical, scalable solutions that leisure operators can implement immediately, many at little to no cost. 

 

Featured presentations include: 

  • Inclusive facility design and community engagement from Maitland City Council 

  • Culturally safe programming through Splash of Colour 

  • Targeted learn-to-swim initiatives for at-risk communities via Royal Life Saving NSW 

  • Gender-diverse swim gatherings at Cook & Phillip Park Pool 

  • Disability access innovations from Para Mobility 

 

Each session responds directly to the needs of communities and the sector, offering real-world strategies that help more people, more often, in more places. 

The need for inclusive aquatic spaces is urgent, and the solutions are ready for uptake and translation to aquatic facilities across NSW, the ACT and beyond.
