Community Consultation is Key
Belgravia Foundation acknowledges the development of a group exercise program, FIT4FOUR, after discussions at local Community Network Forum and consultations with community. This program aimed to tackle the specific barriers that deter young girls from engaging in physical activities like teen gym.
Recognising these challenges, the initiative offered a variety of group exercise classes over four weeks, all free of charge, to girls aged 12-18. The selection of classes was strategic, designed to provide a broad introduction to the fitness environment, reducing intimidation and enhancing familiarity.
Community network forums provide an opportunity to facilitate vital conversations among diverse stakeholders, sparking innovative ideas and initiatives. This input is crucial for developing tailored programs that effectively address specific barriers and enhance community involvement. The input of key stake holders ensures that programs delivered in local Belgravia Leisure venues are relevant to the needs and priorities of the wider community.
This community-driven approach not only increased physical participation but also nurtured a positive, supportive atmosphere. Participants reported feeling more empowered and confident, they enjoyed this program because “it wasn’t serious, and was lots of fun” with many expressing a newfound comfort in utilizing gym facilities independently beyond the program's schedule. Such feedback underscores the success of FIT4FOUR in creating a welcoming and inclusive space.
Looking forward, the program's positive reception and ongoing interest in activities like boxing and weight classes indicate potential areas for expansion. Continuous community feedback is essential to evolve FIT4FOUR into a sustainable initiative that keeps meeting the needs and interests of its participants, ultimately fostering long-term engagement and wellness among young girls at the Monbulk Aquatic Centre.
Belgravia Foundation continues to support facilities to engage with their communities to build relationships and establish a rapport that can result in program development to help individuals with their health and wellness journey.
