Belgravia Foundation remains committed to supporting mental health as it continues to impact our nation

In light of Lifeline's recent statistics, revealing it’s largest volume of calls every on Sunday 28th April 2024, the gravity of the mental health crisis gripping our communities has become ever more apparent. As the “shadow pandemic” persists, so too does the toll it takes on our collective mental well-being. However, amidst this alarming statistic, Belgravia Foundation remains steadfast in its dedication to supporting the mental health of the workforce and community connected to leisure and recreation.

At Belgravia Foundation, we recognise the profound impact of mental health on individuals and communities alike. Through our initiatives and programs, like MHeLP and the Take Charge Exercise Program, we strive to provide vital resources and avenues of support to those in need. Whether through leisure centres, community engagement initiatives, or partnerships with mental health organisations, we are committed to fostering environments that prioritise positive mental health strategies for individuals and the collective community.

In collaboration with local stakeholders and mental health experts, Belgravia Foundation works tirelessly to destigmatize mental health discussions, increase access to support services, and promote holistic well-being. From hosting mental health awareness events to offering inclusive programs that cater to diverse needs, we aim to create spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, and supported.

One of our more recent efforts includes a presentation on MHeLP at the AUSactive Health Summit in April 2024 by Belgravia Leisure's General Manager Programs, Grant Connors. MHeLP is a cutting-edge Mental Health eLearning Program developed under the guidance of international mental health and exercise experts. Designed for the New Zealand and Australian leisure and community support sectors to equip workers and volunteers with strategies to support themselves and others’ mental health.

Grant presented compelling pre and post-data from 4,500 participants, demonstrating tangible improvements in understanding, knowledge and confidence in mental health care within community fitness settings.

Delegates learnt more about supplementary support for responsive strategies in fitness centres, along with a specialised program to foster inclusion for individuals with mental illnesses (Take Charge).

Grant shared his perspective on the topic, stating “Mental health is fundamental to overall wellbeing, especially for those accessing support within our community fitness centres. By integrating effective support systems into our facilities like MHeLP, we have the power to truly impact and improve people’s lives.”

“Investing in mental health support within community fitness facilities is not just a responsibility; it’s an opportunity to truly transform lives. Through initiatives like Take Charge, we’re not only enhancing wellbeing, but we’re also fostering a culture of empathy and support.

“Together as a sector, let’s continue to champion mental health awareness and create inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and supported, because Together We Move More,” Grant concluded.

Belgravia Foundation remains resolute in its mission to uplift and empower communities amidst these challenges. Together, we can weather this storm and emerge stronger, more resilient, and more connected than ever before.
