Community Pantry at Lakeside Leisure Centre Continues to Make a Big Difference
Since its launch in 2020, the Community Pantry at Lakeside Leisure Centre has been a lifeline for many in the local community. Originally established by The Y in partnership with Coles and Second Bite during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the pantry began as a simple but powerful initiative: providing support for people doing it tough, while reducing food waste and saving quality food from landfill.
What started as a crisis response has grown into a lasting program that is now proudly supported by the Belgravia Foundation, alongside Coles and Second Bite. Today, the pantry continues to thrive, offering much-needed relief to a wide range of community members, from young families to senior citizens, at a time when rising costs of living are placing added strain on household budgets.
The impact of the pantry has been significant. This year alone, 91 pantry pick-ups have already taken place, saving 8.6 tonnes of food from landfill. This remarkable achievement not only helps nourish households but also contributes to a more sustainable future by reducing waste.
The pantry is restocked every Monday, Tuesday and Friday thanks to the dedication of the Lakeside Leisure Centre team and the strength of community partnerships. For many regular visitors, the impact is deeply personal.
“I am really grateful for the pantry, it really helps me to provide healthy and nutritious meals for my family.”
“The pantry pick-up helps make my pension go that little bit further.”
These heartfelt testimonials highlight the true value of the pantry: it not only provides food essentials but also dignity, connection, and peace of mind.
The Lakeside Leisure Centre team, together with its partners, remain committed to ensuring the Community Pantry continues to serve as a beacon of support and sustainability for years to come.
