Belgravia Foundation celebrates WaterMarc Banyule’s inclusive triumph in the cycle studio

At WaterMarc Banyule, inclusivity and accessibility are more than just words; they are the guiding principles behind every endeavor. The recently renovated cycle studio is a testament to this commitment, with an inspiring story that illustrates the power of creating spaces for everyone, regardless of their abilities.

Meet Sharyn, a long-time member of WaterMarc. Sharyn, who uses a wheelchair, has been a dedicated participant in the facility's activities for years. She frequents the centre with her husband Lee and has cultivated strong social connections within the community. After her workouts, it's not uncommon to find Sharyn and her friends enjoying a coffee at the cafe, basking in the camaraderie that makes WaterMarc more than just a fitness centre.

However, something innovative happened in the past fortnight that made the WaterMarc experience even more special for Sharyn. She noticed a new addition to the cycle studio – the TechnoGym Top Arm Cycle, designed to support individuals in wheelchairs or those recovering from lower limb injuries. Inspired by the possibilities this equipment offered, Sharyn decided to give it a try.

Sharyn joined Kylie's 9.20 am cycle class, using the new Top Arm Cycle. The experience was nothing short of transformative. She completed the entire class from her wheelchair, reveling in the joy of participating in a group fitness class alongside her friends. The energy in the room was palpable, as other members witnessed their friend Sharyn breaking barriers and embracing the sense of inclusion that WaterMarc champions.

This heartwarming moment exemplifies WaterMarc's dedication to providing accessible and inclusive programs. Recognising the need to expand their offerings, the facility embarked on a renovation and equipment update project for the cycle studio. The goal was clear; ensure that every individual, regardless of their diversity, could partake in the exhilarating world of group cycling.

Wes, Venue Manager for WaterMarc, explains, "The studio renovation will be completed later in 2023 and, along with the new bikes, will introduce amazing light and sound integration and a whole new motivational vibe to the space." This commitment to continuous improvement underscores WaterMarc's pledge to enhance the guest experience continually.

Sharyn herself acknowledges the positive impact of these changes. "WaterMarc has fabulous facilities for everyone, including people with disabilities," she shares. "The addition of a handbike in the cycle studio is very welcoming and adds to the suite inclusive equipment." For Sharyn, the new equipment not only contributes to her physical health but also fosters a sense of community and fun that comes with group exercise. She particularly praises the welcoming attitude of Kylie (Community Engagement Coordinator) and the assistance provided by Jodie (acting Health Club Coordinator) and Jenny (Group Fitness Coordinator), ensuring her full inclusion in the classes.

In Sharyn's words, "Inclusivity is such an important thing in all people's lives - perhaps even more so for people living with disabilities. I am so appreciative of WaterMarc's efforts to further provide the means to allow this to happen."

WaterMarc's cycle studio now boasts 38 Techno Gym Group Cycle Bikes and one TechnoGym Top Arm Cycle. With over 1200 member and guest visits each month, attending the 14 weekly classes, the studio has become a hub of activity and inclusivity. The cycle timetable includes Les Mills RPM classes, freestyle cycle classes, and a newly introduced Seniors Cycle class, which is receiving excellent attendance.

Sharyn's remarkable journey within the WaterMarc community is a testament to the profound impact that inclusion and accessibility can have on individuals' lives. It's a reminder that, at WaterMarc Banyule, they're not just creating fitness spaces; they're fostering a sense of belonging and breaking down barriers, one pedal at a time.
