Community Collaboration Delivers Accessibility Upgrade for Crystal Brook Swimming Pool

In a testament to the power of community collaboration, Belgravia Foundation in partnership with the Crystal Brook community, has celebrated the approval of a $10,000 grant to enhance accessibility at the Crystal Brook Swimming Pool operated by Belgravia Leisure. The grant, funded through the 2024 Clements Gap Sustainable Community Fund under Pacific Blue’s Community Benefit Sharing Program, will ensure the pool is more inclusive for individuals for all – no matter their ability or circumstance – creating a space where everyone can enjoy the physical and social benefits of aquatic activities.

The need for improved accessibility was first raised during a six-monthly Community Network Forum held at the pool. Local residents highlighted that the existing infrastructure did not adequately meet the needs of patrons with mobility challenges, including those living with physical disabilities, frailty, chronic conditions or injuries.

This important community feedback spurred action. Belgravia Foundation successfully lead and applied for the grant submission, while additional contributions from a dedicated local community group passionate about Crystal Brook ensured the accessible steps project was fully funded.

Looking ahead, Belgravia Leisure and the Port Pirie Regional Council are planning further upgrades, including relocating a chair lift to the pool, to provide even greater accessibility. Together, these improvements will remove barriers for individuals who are unable to use stairs, enabling them to experience the health, fitness, and social benefits of the pool.

Belgravia Leisure Venue Manager Damon Walsh officially accepted the grant at a presentation ceremony held at the Port Broughton Bowling Club on September 17th.

“Since taking on the management of this venue, it’s been clear through community platforms like our forums that the current facilities have created obstacles for many who would benefit from using the pool—whether for recreation, rehabilitation, or social connection,” Walsh said.

“This is a fantastic example of how open dialogue and community engagement can create meaningful change. Thanks to the collective efforts of Crystal Brook residents, Belgravia Foundation, Pacific Blue, and Port Pirie Regional Council, we’re making this pool accessible for all and fulfilling a vital community need.”

The accessible steps are scheduled to be installed at the Crystal Brook Swimming Pool within the Summer Season , marking another step forward in fostering an inclusive, healthy, and connected community.
