Yarra Centre Taking Charge of youth engagement

Belgravia Foundation recognises the utilisation of strong connections and deliberation at local sites during their Community Network Forums to identify relevant needs and priorities to address.

Following a Community Network Forum hosted at the Yarra Centre in the Yarra Ranges, the team identified that young people in Upper Yarra require additional efforts to increase youth engagement. Aiming to combat barriers related to self-esteem, confidence, financial constraints and mental health challenges that reduce youth engagement in community activities and physical exercise; it was determined that additional programs and focused discussions are necessary to address these.

After gathering evidence from Belgravia Foundation’s existing Take Charge Exercise Program, it was highlighted that this program was not completely prioritising the fitness needs of all age groups. This engagement is focused on catering exercise to young individuals through in group setting, promoting social connection and consequently creating a safe space. Using local outreach to high schools in the area, the program quickly saw success and active engagement from participants. Since this outreach began, there has been increasing activity during Teen Gym hours, which has also seen a spike in teen memberships as well as additional efforts to integrate wellness into educational programs, solidifying the importance of community partnerships in creating accessible opportunities for youth. This model has begun expanding to other schools, indicating the program’s positive impact and potential for wider application.

The Take Charge Program is structured around termly incursions and excursions, designed to collaboratively increase youth participation at the leisure centre. The groups are limited to 6 people to ensure that participants were still able to receive personal care and support where required. In addition, participating students are also granted a 60-day complimentary teen membership to Yarra Centre.

In parallel, these efforts resulted in expanded partnerships. Yarra Centre demonstrated the commitment to supporting the Upper Yarra Secondary College in their 'Believe and Succeed Program,' which operates during the third term. This strengthened collaboration is a testament to the enduring power of community partnerships, dedicated to nurturing the well-being and prospects of the youth in the Upper Yarra region.
