Strong Community Spirit at Lakeside Leisure Centre

Thanks to the generosity of M.I.D. Support, Raymond Terrace and Medowie Lions Club as well as local community sponsors, Lakeside Leisure recently acquired a brand new all abilities water wheel chair. The new chair has additional specifications allowing for a larger number of people requiring support to access aquatic programs and activities.

Through a strong relationship with user groups and the community a gap was identified in the facility offerings. The aquatic environment is ideal to promote mobility and maintain wellness for those engaged in rehab or therapy and our facility at Lakeside Leisure Centre offers the perfect setting with the indoor therapy pool-heated to a comfortable 32 degrees and beach entry. The Centre delivers 8 Aqua Fitness classes per week also servicing over 150 participants living with a disability each week.

Through the Belgravia Foundation local fundraising initiatives including a Dive in Movie night, generous community sponsorship and substantial donations from M.I.D. Support, Raymond Terrace and Medowie Lions club, over $7000 was raised to purchase a 200kg weight wheelchair and 8 new wheels for our current wheelchairs. A very special morning tea was held recently to thank all who contributed, with the chair extremely popular with our members.

Whilst the new chair has been a welcomed addition, the Belgravia Foundation is now focused on raising funds to purchase an Entry Sling that transfers individuals from their chair to into the water safely.

At Lakeside we aim to ensure no one is excluded from experiencing the joys of aquatics.
