La Trobe Community Health partner with Knox Leisureworks to research sensory quiet times

Belgravia Foundation celebrates a recent partnership with La Trobe Community Health has led to the introduction of a "Silent Hour" in both the pool deck and gym area at Knox Leisureworks. This project began with 2 months of comprehensive consultations directly involving community members attending Knox Leisureworks, aiming to determine the potential benefits of a quieter, more sensory-friendly environment.

Belgravia Foundation applauds Belgravia Leisure’s commitment to using evidence-based research to support the implementation of a program, ensuring that it is a need and priority for the community.

The consultation revealed that 73% of respondents believed they or someone they care for would greatly benefit from a sensory hour, tailored to reduce noise and other sensory stimuli. Notably, feedback indicated a general acceptance of background music during this hour, with many commenting that it could enhance the sensory experience rather than detract from it, the cofounding factor is often the volume at which it is played.

This feedback has been instrumental in shaping the Silent Hour at Knox Leisureworks, ensuring that the adjustments made truly cater to the needs of the community, particularly benefiting those with sensory sensitivities.

Sensory hours can significantly enhance accessibility for individuals with sensory processing disorders, autism, or those who simply prefer a less stimulating environment. During these quieter times, reduced noise and softer lighting help in minimizing anxiety and stress, creating a more welcoming and inclusive space. These adaptations make the leisure centre more accessible and enjoyable for everyone, promoting mental well-being and encouraging more frequent visits. The positive response underscores a significant demand for more inclusive and adaptable public spaces, paving the way for similar initiatives in other venues.

This relationship between Knox Leisureworks and La Trobe Community Health exemplifies the impact of direct community engagement in creating environments that support wellness and inclusivity for all users.
