Wulanda Recreation & Convention Centre ignites local disability employment pathways

Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre is setting a remarkable precedent in prioritising disability employment and fostering workforce diversity. Leading the charge is Cassandra Gill, a local woman living with an intellectual disability, who has secured a customer service and administration role at the centre. Belgravia Leisure and Belgravia Foundation are at the forefront of promoting access and inclusion in the leisure industry, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to be active participants in their community.

Cassie, as she is affectionately known, brings to her role a Certificate 3 in Business Administration and a warm, friendly demeanor, making her a perfect fit for customer service.

The journey to Cassie's employment began with Wulanda Recreation & Convention Centre's inaugural Community Network Forum in June 2023. This forum brought together representatives from local community organisations, leaders, and City of Mount Gambier staff to strategise and ensure that Wulanda is a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive space for all community members. It was through this forum that the opportunity for employment arose, with support from local employment agency wdeaworks. Cassie was formally interviewed by Venue Manager Heidi Gajic as part of the recruitment process.

Heidi Gajic describes that having Cassie as part of the team has been a positive experience, not just the Wulanda Team but also our members and patrons, who are greeted with her infectious smile as she checks them in a reception or handles enquiries. Her commitment, dedication to ongoing learning and hard work along are an asset to Wulanda.

Belgravia Leisure elevated its Workforce Diversification project in 2023, known as the Belgravia Census. This initiative provided insights into the organisation's workforce composition, revealing that 11.2% of employees across Australia are living with disabilities, with conditions such as ADHD and Autism being the most prevalent.

These findings have become the basis for ongoing efforts to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all Belgravia Leisure team members. It underscores the importance of providing necessary support and accommodations to ensure an accessible work environment for everyone.

Cassie quotes ‘I love it here at Wulanda, grateful for the opportunity for the employment and look forward to coming in and working with the team here every week. My favorite day is Saturday morning as it is busy and get to meet all the young swimmers coming in for swimming lessons. “

Wulanda Recreation Centre's commitment to disability employment and Belgravia Leisure's dedication to workforce diversity exemplifies their unwavering commitment to breaking barriers and fostering an inclusive society. This initiative not only benefits individuals like Cassie but also enriches the entire community by promoting diversity and equality in the workplace.

Belgravia Foundation congratulate Cassie’s achievements and celebrate Belgravia Leisure’s committment to workforce diversity.
