Understanding Ableism and Embracing Inclusivity at Belgravia Foundation

In our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all to participate in leisure here at Belgravia Foundation, it is essential that we address ableism and challenge the stereotypes associated with people living with disabilities.

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) was December 3rd, with celebrations continueing this week. This day of significance serves as a reminder to deepen our understanding and encourage empathy within the leisure sector. We took a look into one of our partners, Belgravia Leisure, and the initiatives that they have implemented to recognise and celebrate the contributions of people with a disability in the leisure sector.

Belgravia Leisure Census Findings

Belgravia Leisure’s recent Census revealed that 11.2% of our Australian team members reported living with a disability, while in New Zealand, the figure was 13%.

Neurodiversity conditions, including ADHD and Autism, were the most prevalent types of disabilities, highlighting the diversity within the workforce. These statistics emphasise the need for ongoing support to create an inclusive and accessible workplace for all.

Understanding Ableism through the ABC News Quiz

Ableism is defined by disability advocates as the discrimination against people with disabilities, perpetuating the misconception that their lives are less valuable than those of non-disabled individuals.

The ABC News Quiz on Ableism is a valuable tool to challenge unconscious biases that may unknowingly exist within our teams. By considering how we might initially react to various situations presented in the quiz, we can gain insights into our own perceptions and promote self-awareness.

As we continue to grow as a diverse and dynamic sector, it is crucial that we address ableism and work towards dismantling the stereotypes associated with disabilities.

We can actively contribute to breaking down barriers and fostering a culture of inclusivity within our facilities, services, programs and employment. We want to thank you for your commitment to embracing diversity and championing inclusivity in your work and everyday lives.

By leveraging the insights from the Belgravia Leisure Census, participating in the ABC News quiz and actively supporting IDPwD, we can foster an environment where every body feels valued, respected and empowered to thrive.

Together, let’s continue breaking down barriers and building a workplace that celebrates the unique abilities and contributions of every individual!
