Celebrating a Decade and Community Spirit at MAC’s Big Birthday Bash

In the heart of Dandenong Ranges, the Monbulk Aquatic Centre, affectionately known as MAC, recently threw a spectacular "Big Birthday Bash" to mark its 10-year anniversary since reopening after extensive renovations. This event was more than just a celebration; it was a testament to the enduring spirit of community, generosity, and the profound impact of coming together in times of adversity.

The past three years have presented significant challenges for the Hills Community, beginning with the onset of the global pandemic and culminating in "The Storm" on June 10th, 2021, a historic weather event that wreaked havoc in Victoria. The storm left many locals grappling with the loss of their homes, displacement, property damage, and a prolonged recovery process.

For Monbulk Aquatic Centre, this catastrophe meant extensive damage to their pool hall, resulting in a painful 18-month closure. During this time, countless children missed out on vital swimming lessons, and many others who relied on the facility for rehabilitation, health, and wellness found themselves unable to access its services.

In the face of these challenges, the "Big Birthday Bash" emerged as a ray of positivity, a day to give back to the resilient community that had weathered so much. It was an open invitation for everyone to come together and enjoy a day filled with free activities, symbolising the strength of unity and collective resilience.

The event engaged approximately 500 people, including swim school members, their families, guests, and event visitors. Remarkably, entry to the festivities was entirely free, offering access to all activities, the pool, and gym. The day's schedule was packed with exciting events, ensuring that there was something for everyone:

·       Group Fitness Mega Class: A high-energy fitness extravaganza

·       GOswim Members Races: Showcasing the aquatic skills of GOswim members

·       Monbulk Marlins Squad Demonstration: A thrilling display of aquatic prowess

·       Disco: Groovy beats and dance moves for all to enjoy

·       Inflatable: Water adventures on an exciting inflatable

·       Face Painting: Transforming faces into works of art

·       Sausage Sizzle: Delicious bites to satisfy hunger

·       Pop-up Market: Featuring over 12 stalls with diverse offerings

·       Gift Bags: Tokens of appreciation for attendees

·       Raffles with Awesome Prizes: Exciting chances to win fantastic rewards

The community spirit shone brightly as everyone came together to celebrate, enjoy the festivities, and support a local charity. Raffles and a Silent Auction were held during the event, featuring prizes generously donated by suppliers and local businesses. Prizes ranged from Bunnings vouchers to beautiful local nursery vouchers, tool bags, and hampers filled with swim gear.

The event's fundraising efforts were entirely dedicated to Belgravia Foundation. 100% of the funds raised will be reinvested into the Monbulk community to welcome, support and included those who often miss out on the opportunity to participate in aquatics, leisure and recreation.

The "Big Birthday Bash" was not just about celebrating a decade of MAC; it was a heartwarming showcase of the strength of community bonds, the generosity of local businesses, and the enduring spirit of resilience. In coming together, the Monbulk community demonstrated that even in the face of adversity, they could create moments of joy and make a positive impact that ripples through their community, leaving a lasting legacy of togetherness.

Belgravia Foundation wishes to thank the local Monbulk community for their contributions in support of improving pathways to participation for underrepresented groups in leisure facilities, services, programs and employment.
