Belgravia Foundation supports active play and social connection for children with a disability through Lego Club

Belgravia Foundation is thrilled to support Loftus Recreation Centre’s new afterschool program that supports local kids living with a disability to be involved in active play and social activity.

Based on conversations with regular patrons and their carers at Loftus Recreation Centre, the Access and Inclusion Co-ordinator identified a community access gap for NDIS participants in the area.  After speaking to several organisations that provide respite and out of home care for young people with a disability, it was discovered that there was a significant lack of free or affordable inclusive after school activities.  Carers expressed that allocated money from a NDIS plan was spent on hiring the carer, leaving no funds left for a fun activity.

Ascot Rotary are renowned as the hosts of an annual “Bricktober” Lego Display for the Perth community each October. On Tuesday 22nd March, Ascot Rotary held their monthly breakfast meeting. During the breakfast, Rotarians learned about the long list of programs and innovations that Loftus Recreation Centre has implemented in support of people in need to connect with healthy activity in a community setting, as well as the role Belgravia Foundation has played.

Ascot Rotary recognised the strong alignment between their mission and that of Loftus Recreation Centre and Belgravia Foundation, and donated two tubs of Lego for the after school free Lego Club at Loftus Recreation Centre.

This fun filled program, supports children, teenagers and adults with neuro-typical and neuro-divergent learning styles from many backgrounds. This Lego will be used in free afterschool clubs to help develop social skills and STEM abilities in participants from the City of Vincent local area.

To ensure that people of all ages and abilities were able to access appropriate, socially inclusive and free programs, Ascot Rotary and the Belgravia Foundation worked with Loftus Recreation Centre to create a fun solution!
