Belgravia Foundation Embraces Diversity: Reflecting on IDAHOBIT's Significance

Every year on May 17th, the world marks International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), commemorating the significance of this day in 1990, when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its Classification of Diseases. This day is not only a celebration of the milestones achieved in LGBTQIA+ equality but also a sober reminder of the recentness of these advancements.

IDAHOBIT serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle against discrimination faced by the LGBTQIA+ community globally. It emphasises the importance of fostering inclusive environments where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, feels safe, respected, and valued.

Belgravia Foundation and Belgravia Leisure are dedicated to nurturing diversity and inclusion across all our leisure facilities. On this special day, we stand in solidarity with communities across Australia and New Zealand, celebrating our differences and promoting acceptance and understanding.

In line with Belgravia’s social inclusion statement, our local venues organised various activities to honour IDAHOBIT and demonstrate support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Knox Leisureworks hosted a free reformer Pilates class followed by complimentary tea or coffee, accompanied by an informative speech highlighting the day's significance and providing resources on allyship and support services.

  • Gympie Aquatic and Recreation Centre showcased the social inclusion statement prominently in their reception flip display folder, reaffirming their commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.

  • Tomaree Aquatic Centre and Monbulk Aquatic Centre displayed posters raising awareness about IDAHOBIT, with Monbulk Aquatic Centre proudly flying the pride flag and sharing relevant statistics to raise awareness.

  • Trust House Recreation Centre Masterton combined celebrations for IDAHOBIT and Pink Shirt Day, promoting kindness and inclusivity to combat bullying and discrimination.

  • The City of Sydney marked International Transgender Day of Visibility by inviting the transgender community and their loved ones to Belgravia Leisure in Sydney, offering a welcoming space for leisure and affirmation.

  • Keilor East Aquatic Centre celebrated in style, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community and their ally’s in an aquatic Pride Night.

Belgravia Foundation celebrates the diversity within Belgravia Leisure, exemplified by events held at our local sites, by our local champions. These initiatives break barriers and create spaces where everyone feels welcome and affirmed.

As we reflect on IDAHOBIT's significance, we continue our commitment to building an environment where every individual can live authentically and without fear of discrimination. Together, let's celebrate our diversity and continue championing inclusivity in all aspects of leisure and recreation.
