Belgravia Foundation congratulates Mill Park Leisure, City of Whittlesea and Whittlesea Somali Association for their finalist position in Inclusion Program of the Year.

The 2024 Australian Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Awards are aimed at recognising individuals, government, not-for-profits, the commercial sector, play sector, recreation and sports of their innovations to get more people active in the community.

The Inclusion Program of the Year holds prestige in the efforts of the local champions at our venues in advocating for diverse communities, empowering them to actively participate.

Aziz, the Community Engagement Coordinator at Mill Park Leisure Centre established a strong relationship with Whittlesea Somali Association. His efforts in collaborating with them assisted in their success in obtaining a funding grant coordinating a program that would be inclusive, safe, and welcoming for the group.

The Whittlesea Somali Men’s Social Swimming Program facilitates social swimming sessions specifically designed for the Somali men in the Whittlesea community. This program not only promotes physical health through swimming but also fosters strong social bonds among participants, enhancing both their mental well-being and community integration. Beyond swimming and water safety, the program aimed to:

  • Create a Safe Space: Providing a secure environment where youth can engage in leisure activities and build a sense of belonging.

  • Promote Well-being: Enhance mental and physical well-being through recreational activities.

  • Divert from Anti-social Behaviours: Channel participants away from potential anti-social behaviours through positive engagement.

The success of this initiative has not only impacted the lives of its direct participants but has also set a powerful example for other communities and organisations. It shows that with thoughtful planning and community partnership, sports and recreation can be powerful tools for social inclusion and mental health promotion.

Belgravia Foundations wishes the team at Mill Park Leisure Centre, City of Whittlesea and Whittlesea Somali Association congratulations and good luck for the upcoming award night on 27th of June at the Melbourne Exhibition & Convention Centre.
