The power of inclusive communication technologies at Keilor East Aquatic Centre

Belgravia Foundation would like to celebrate Belgravia Leisure’s commitment to ensuring that all members of the community, regardless of their unique needs, feel welcomed, supported, and included in Belgravia Leisure operated facilities. Recently, Belgravia Leisure had the privilege of receiving heartfelt feedback from a parent of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), highlighting their positive experience at Keilor East Aquatic Centre.

The parent shared candidly about the challenges they face in planning outings with their child, navigating the mental load of anticipating and mitigating potential stressors. However, they emphasised the importance of water activities for their child's well-being and enjoyment.

To ensure a successful outing, the parent described their meticulous approach of layering strategies, from preparing their child in advance to communicating with our staff about their specific needs. They expressed gratitude for Belgravia Foundation’s and Belgravia Leisure’s partnership with Cérge, which provided visual support through a Visual Story, helping their child familiarise themselves with the facility before arrival.

Upon arrival at Keilor East Aquatic Centre, the parent noted the efficiency and warmth of staff, who facilitated a smooth check-in process and provided helpful guidance on accessing quieter areas within the facility. This thoughtful approach significantly reduced the parent's anxiety and allowed their family to fully enjoy their time at the centre.

The parent expressed immense appreciation for the supportive environment created by staff, describing it as a "silent mum army" that provided invaluable backup and assurance throughout their visit. Ultimately, their experience ended on a high note, with their family returning home feeling fulfilled and smiling.

This heartwarming testimonial underscores the importance of prioritising inclusion and accessibility in leisure facilities. By listening to the needs of families and implementing tailored strategies, we as a sector can create meaningful experiences that enrich the lives of individuals with ASD and their loved ones.

Belgravia Foundation are dedicated to championing initiatives that promote inclusion, break down barriers, and empower individuals of all abilities to participate fully in leisure activities. We are grateful for the opportunity to play a part in creating positive outcomes for families like these, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to foster inclusive communities across Australia and New Zealand.
