Belgravia Foundation celebrates friendship and togetherness at Franklin Pool & Leisure Centre

On the 17th of December last year, the community spirit at Franklin Pool & Leisure reached new heights as families from diverse backgrounds came together for a shared Christmas lunch. This heartwarming event was a part of an initiative to welcome and connect with recent migrants in the Pukekohe area.

Following a community engagement Hui in September, the team at Franklin Pool & Leisure recognised the growing cultural diversity in the region, with a significant number of South African and Zimbabwean families making Pukekohe their new home. The aim was clear: to provide a space for these families to meet, connect, and share their experiences, challenges, and opportunities.

The initiative gained momentum with the support of Virginia, a member who had migrated to New Zealand 20 years ago. An invitation was extended through the local church newsletter, and the response was overwhelming. Families eagerly accepted the invitation, highlighting their desire to meet others who had recently settled in Franklin.

The day began with a warm welcome and introductions, followed by a shared lunch and the exchange of gifts. The group fitness room was transformed into a hub for families, fostering an environment of connection and community. A tour of the facility showcased the diverse offerings for families.

Amidst the festivities, there was an added bonus as Special Olympics Counties & Franklin Basketball held a 3X3 unified comp, Sport & Inclusion Day. Families had VIP access to the courts, experiencing the fast-paced games courtside and even meeting the big-league team.

The excitement continued down to the pools, where children engaged in water play activities and a friendly game of water tag. The mission; to know each other's names and introduce new friends to their mums. After some relaxation and a cuppa, families exchanged contact details, made plans for future gatherings, and even decided to make this a regular event.

The impact was tangible — two mums expressed their intention to register their children for swimming lessons in the new year, and another mum joined the gym. Beyond the activities, what resonated most was the sense of community and the joy of making new friends. It was a day filled with laughter, shared experiences, and the beginning of lasting connections — a true testament to the power of community togetherness.
