Belgravia Foundation celebrates Burpengary’s Ricky Betar’s journey to the Paralympics

Belgravia Foundation is extremely proud of Ricky Betar, a Belgravia Leisure lifeguard at Burpengary Regional Aquatic & Leisure Centre in Queensland, who is set to compete in his second Paralympic Games. Ricky, who lives with autism and ADHD, will show his exceptional talent in Paris later this year in the 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 100m backstroke. 

Ricky’s dedication to swimming has already earned him international recognition, with his time in the 200m individual medley ranking sixth in the world and there’s no one prouder than his number one fan, his Mum, Nori.

Ricky’s journey to the Paralympics is a testament to his determination and resilience. From his early days of swimming lessons at age one to placing last in his first swimming carnival at nine, Ricky has faced numerous challenges head-on.

Ricky’s Mum, Nori, who also works at Burpengary as a part of the GOswim Contact Centre team shares, “Because of his conditions, teachers would dismiss him, call him hopeless and horrible names. Now, because of his achievements, he is finally being acknowledged for his incredible abilities and it’s truly amazing to see.”

Despite the obstacles, Ricky’s passion for swimming and commitment to his sport has driven him to excel. As he prepares for his second Paralympics, Ricky feels stronger and faster than ever before. 

“From the moment I realised I could compete as a swimmer with an intellectual impairment in the Paralympics, it became my goal. Now, getting ready for my second Paralympics while working as a lifeguard, I’m confident and really excited for what’s to come in Paris,” Ricky said. 

One thing that would make Ricky’s journey even more special is having his mum, Nori, by his side in Paris. Nori has been Ricky’s biggest supporter throughout his swimming career. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, Nori is not able to afford the trip to Paris.

To help make this dream a reality, the GOswim Contact Centre team at Burpengary has launched a GoFundMe campaign. The goal is to raise enough funds to cover Nori’s travel expenses so she can be there to support Ricky in Paris.

“This is a heart-warming story that, if shared and embraced, will enable Nori to be there, ensuring that Ricky’s achievements are celebrated with the love and pride of family by his side,” said Cheryl McLennan, Queensland Aquatics Manager.
