Fostering Community Connection and Crime Prevention: The Somali Men's Social Swim Program

Belgravia Foundation, in partnership with Mill Park Leisure and the Whittlesea Somali Association, proudly presents the Somali Men's Social Swim Program. This transformative initiative has turned Mill Park Leisure into a vibrant hub, fostering social connection and crime prevention among Somali and culturally aligned youth.

Mill Park Leisure, recognizing the need for inclusive programs, has opened its doors to Somali youth. Every Saturday night from 6pm to 8pm, the Somali Men’s Social Swim Program offers exclusive access to leisure facilities. Beyond swimming and water safety, this program aims to:

  • Create a Safe Space: Providing a secure environment where youth can engage in leisure activities and build a sense of belonging.

  • Promote Well-being: Enhance mental and physical well-being through recreational activities.

  • Divert from Anti-social Behaviours: Channel participants away from potential anti-social behaviours through positive engagement.

This program was meticulously co-designed in collaboration with the Whittlesea Somali Association. Community leaders, young representatives, and elders provided valuable input to ensure its cultural responsiveness and effectiveness. Supported by a $50,000 grant from the Department of Justice and Community Safety, it aligns seamlessly with community needs and Belgravia's core values.

The Somali Men’s Social Swim Program has achieved remarkable outcomes:

  • Diverse Engagement: Participants, many of whom had never considered the leisure centre for such purposes, are now connected to health programs, job opportunities, and community activities.

  • Increased Foot Traffic: The initiative has attracted more visitors and participants, enhancing the venue's recognition as a valuable asset for personal health and community well-being.

  • Trust and Positive Engagement: The program has facilitated trust-building, meaningful conversations, and positive community engagement.

The program's success is evident:

  • Participant Numbers Soared: Weekly participants increased from 20 to an impressive 70, demonstrating its appeal and impact.

  • Heightened Engagement: Foot traffic at Mill Park Leisure Centre surged, reflecting heightened engagement within the community.

  • Enhanced Venue Value: Participant feedback highlights newfound trust and recognition of the venue's value.

  • Tangible Outcomes: The program has led to improved community connections, enhanced well-being, cross-cultural understanding, job prospects, and positive shifts in attitudes towards Australian society and cultural integration.

This initiative has yielded significant benefits for participants, the community, and Belgravia Leisure. It has created a safe and supportive community, improving mental and physical health while reducing the risk of anti-social behaviour. Furthermore, it promotes inclusive Australian values and addresses integration challenges, all within the framework of social swimming.

The Somali Men’s Social Swim Program has strengthened community connections, generated revenue through grants, and solidified Belgravia Leisure's reputation as an inclusive and community-focused organisation. This program underscores the profound impact of community-driven initiatives on the well-being and integration of culturally diverse youth. It serves as a testament to the importance of partnerships, cultural responsiveness, and engagement in creating inclusive and empowering spaces within our communities.
