Promisetown Picnic celebrations
On Saturday 19th March, Thomastown Recreation Aquatic Centre (TRAC) hosted the Promisetown Picnic, presented by Thomastown Neighbourhood House and supported by the City of Whittlesea Community Events Funding Program & Community Recovery Fund. The Promisetown Picnic is a family fun day featuring markets, magic shows, kids’ craft activities, Food Trucks and more!
Part of the Lalor Thomastown Multicultural Festival, the March picnic event opened up the celebrations for Cultural Diversity week. Using a collaborative approach, TRAC and Thomastown Neighbourhood House attracted over 500 visitors. The fun-filled day featured performances by the Indian 'Shanti Dancers', singing sensation Rita Enosa and the world-class circus star, Dandyman! Local artist Becky James ran the Kids Art Space, where children made gorgeous multicultural dolls from recycled materials. Yarra Plenty Regional Libraries enthralled the children during storytelling time. Children also enjoyed face painting, balloons and the Scout's obstacle course. Local homemade crafts and collectables were on sale at the mini-market. Snacks were available from the Vietnamese Food Truck and Bec's Choc Bomb van.
Sharing a vision of creating greater access to programs, activities and volunteer opportunities, TRAC and Thomastown Neighbourhood House have a long-standing partnership. The Promisetown picnic was a success, celebrating multiculturalism by bringing people together to participate in various cultural activities and to learn more about other cultures. TRAC will be collaborating with Thomastown Neighbourhood House for the next Promisetown Picnic in May to help launch the Walking Thomastown event.
Belgravia Foundation commends TRAC and Thomastown Neighbourhood House for bringing the community together to celebrate diversity and would like to emphasise the importance of community connectedness through events, activities and programs at all Belgravia Leisure venues.
